Chiropractic is the largest natural health care discipline in the UK. It is a treatment that restores the body to health using it's own healing capabilities, it's own Innate Intelligence. That's the intelligence that the body has that heals cuts and grazes, and it can do SO MUCH MORE, given the right circumstances. It starts with being aligned in the spine, the house of the spinal cord, our nervous systems "super highway". If the spine is misaligned then information that travels up and down the spinal cord becomes "scrambled" and health levels drop. Check out the United Chiropractic Association's website for more information.
Chiropractic is a straightforward method of adjusting the bones of your body to maintain the correct alignment of your spine and to ensure that your body’s nerve supply works efficiently. Through these subtle adjustments, chiropractic treatment can provide a better route to health by relieving pain and discomfort, increasing mobility and generally assisting the body to reach optimum health level.
Your spinal column is made up of 24 moveable vertebrae, the sacrum and the coccyx. This column houses the spinal cord through which nerve information is transmitted to the rest of your body. Whilst the spinal column maintains correct alignment, nerve information is passed accurately. However if any part of your spinal column becomes misaligned then a nerve may become impinged, compressed or stretched, distorting the information that passes along it. This can lead to pain, discomfort or restricted mobility.
A misalignment of the vertebrae or bones can occur for many reasons. Some of the most common are incorrect lifting, car or sporting accidents, childbirth, falls, stress and poor posture.
We tend to think of Osteoarthritis OA, as a degenerative disease which occurs as you get older and is inevitable, a consequence of wear and tear, not helped by being overweight, which puts added stress on our joints. The treatment used by the NHS is not really “treatment”. By this I mean it deals with the symptoms and not the cause. Painkillers do nothing to stop the degeneration happening. All drugs come with their side-effects and surgery carries great risk. Research in this area is important.
More and more scientific evidence suggests that collagen hydrolysate stimulates the collagen synthesis of chondrocytes thereby helping to renew the bone tissue and minimize the pain caused by the OA.
Research has been carried out by Steffen Oesser PhD of the University of Kiel, Germany which concludes that collagen which is absorbed via the intestine and accumulates in the joint cartilage has the potential to stimulate collagen in the remaining chondrocytes in patients with OA, which reverses the degenerative condition of OA and may even prevent it developing.
McTimoney Chiropractors use only their hands to make adjustments to the bones of your body. The key to the success of the adjustments is in the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed.
The gentle nature of the McTimoney method makes it especially suitable for people of all ages, including young babies, pregnant women and the elderly.
At the first treatment a full case history regarding your health background, gives the McTimoney Chiropractor an idea as to what may be causing or contributing to your symptoms. This will help her to assess and analyse your particular problem, and tailor her advice for you.
The McTimoney Chiropractor will then thoroughly examine all the joints in your body, literally from head to toe, using only their hands, and make the appropriate adjustments where necessary, a truly “whole body treatment”. That is the Joy of McTimoney.
McTimoney Chiropractors have a very finely tuned sense of touch, developed during their training, which enables them to feel for misalignments of the vertebrae and bones. Upon feeling a misalignment (or subluxation, the term that Chiropractors use) Joy will use one of a number of light, swift and dexterous techniques, unique to the McTimoney method, to adjust the bone
McTimoney Chiropractic is also a preventative therapy and when used in this way greatly improves bodily health and well-being, avoiding long spells of discomfort. Regular check ups are recommended to ensure that your body maintains a healthy balance in all aspects of its daily functioning.
The number of sessions needed varies considerably depending on :
Your age; you generally heal more slowly as you get older.
The nature of the problem: a simple backache will often clear more quickly than a sciatic problem.
How long you have had the problem: generally yesterday’s injury will resolve faster than one of 20 years standing.
Most patients need between two and ten sessions, initially at weekly intervals, then gradually more widely spaced out, by which time a noticeable change should have occurred, though treatment can continue for longer.
Your Chiropractor will, wherever possible, work in cooperation with your GP and a letter is normally sent to them informing them of your treatment. If your Chiropractor discovers or suspects a problem that requires medical investigation, they will in turn refer you to your GP.
